Interlayers in Resistance Spot-Welded Lap Joints: A Critical Review

This paper presents a review of various interlayers employed to enhance the properties similar and dissimilar materials welded by resistance spot welding (RSW). The commonly used base are steel, Al alloys/steel, Al/Al alloys, Al/Ti Al/Mg etc., proposed researchers include Zn, Ni, Sn, galvanised SS304, Al–Mg, AlSi12, graphene, carbon nanotube, etc. Microstructural changes due incorporation were observed, enhancement different mechanical surface was studied focusing on weld joint. It also includes bonding, role process parameters weldment, failure modes observed in tension or lap shear tests. Studies have shown that increasing incorporating suitably selected between mating surfaces joint can significantly quality For RSW Al/steel, usage optimised morphology electrodes, with cover plates, subdue brittle intermetallic compounds formation case alloys.
